Chorley & Coppull Miners' Strike

40th anniversary event

Saturday 27th April, 11am-4pm

Chorley & District Trades Union Council is organising a major 40th anniversary Miners’ Strike event in Coppull, near Chorley on Saturday 27th April.

This will be a full day event (approx 11am til 4pm) at the British Legion Club, Springfield Rd, Coppull.

In 1984-5 about 100 miners were on strike who lived in Coppull and Chorley. The majority were employed at Parkside Colliery in Newton le Willows, with some at Sutton Manor, Golborne and Bold Collieries. There was also Ellerbeck open cast coal site on Wigan Lane near Chorley, which was picketed through there strike.

Chorley and Coppull Miners’ Support Committee was set up in early June 1984, its main function being to provide weekly food parcels to local striking miners and their families.

Whilst at the 27th April anniversary event we want to hear the accounts from those who participated locally in the 1984-5 strike, we have also invited three keynote speakers:

John Harris, well-known professional photographer and supporter of the strike, who recorded in detail many of its important events, including the viscous police attacks on pickets at Orgreave in June 1984. (He took the famous photograph of the mounted policeman baton charging Leslie Bolton at Orgreave.)

Betty Cook and Heather Wood, leading activists in the Miners’ Strike and organisers of the National Women Against Pit Closures.
